球体の家を実現するための試みがスタートした。まずはいくつかの模型を試作し、基本的な構造を検証する。続いて、対象を床部分に絞り、精度を上げた模型をつくった。現在、それを基に実寸の床を制作するところまで進んでいる。建築の実験であるからには、実現可能な構造を考え、具体的な形状に落とし込んでいくことになる。すなわち、ここでは工学的な要素にフォーカスするはずだった。ところが、いざ実験を進めてみると、このアプローチから得られた重要な発見の多くは予想外に多様なものとなった。身体と環境の結びつきや、思考と様式の相互作用など、一旦切り離したはずの事柄が却って浮上してきたのだ。例えば、転がる床の上では、一人よりも複数人であるほうが安定することがわかった。また、8 日間の睡眠実験では、私たち人間がいかに高い順応性を備えているかを知ることとなった。焦点の絞り込みが視点の広がりを招く。このプロジェクトでは、常にそういう連鎖が起きる。

In my first experiments for the realization of a spherical house, I tested basic structures by making several models. From there, I started focusing on the flooring, and built more precise models. I am currently at the stage of producing flooring in the actual dimensions, based on those models. Even at this experimental stage, I need to work out structures that are actually feasible, which are then put into concrete shape. What was supposed to be primarily an engineering part of my experimentation, however, turned out to be a series of important discoveries from this approach, many of which were much more complex than I had expected. Connections between bodies and environments, interactions between thoughts and styles, and other matters that I had supposedly taken out of the equation for now, were suddenly standing out instead. One thing I understood, for example, was that, on the floor of a rolling house, a group of people can stand steadier than one person alone. Furthermore, an 8-day experiment with sleep taught me just how adaptive we humans are. The more I focused on certain things, the more it broadened my horizon, and this chain reaction has been continuing throughout the entire project.

2メートル四方の土地に生える植物を観察、観測する試み。2020年 9月より、土壌にも植物にも一切の手を加えることなく、気温、土壌温度、土壌酸度、目視できる雑草の種類を記録している。すると、いつもそこにあると思っていた雑草が季節によって移り変わり、それに伴い土が変化し、年を追うごとに植生が変わっていくことに気づく。いわゆる植生遷移（裸地から森林が形成される過程）が、ほんのわずかだが目の前で起きている。

This project involved observations and measurements of plants growing on 2 x 2 meter piece of land. Without touching the soil or the plants since September 2020, I made records of data including air temperature, the temperature and acidity of the soil, and types of weeds that I could recognize. In the process, I realized how the vegetation changes over the years. Weeds that I had believed to be at a certain place were changing according to the season, which brought along changes in the soil. This is how, although on a miniature scale, I witnessed a process of so-called succession of vegetation (such as forests growing from bare fields) with my own eyes.

ヨモギ、スギナ、セイタカアワダチソウなど、日常の景色にひそむ「雑草」と呼ばれる野の草に焦点を当て、かつて人々が頼った知恵や効能を見つめ、苦味や野性さえも味わいとし、人と自然の関係を、現代の身体や感覚に問い直すことを目的としています。

This is an experimental project on weeds tea by artist Daisuke Nagaoka, Yuma Harada of design studio UMA/design farm, and Yuka Tsuda.

Through weeds, we aim to connect body, mind, and nature by learning about nature's bounty and its benefits.

Focusing on wild plants like mugwort, horsetail, and Canada goldenrod—often called “weeds” yet hidden in everyday landscapes—we rediscover the wisdom and efficacy people once relied upon. By embracing their bitterness and wildness as flavors, we reexamine the relationship between humans and nature through the lens of the modern body and senses.

故郷の山形から北海道中部の夕張まで、歩くことにした。私たちにとって「移動」とは何か、改めて考えてみたくなったからだ。人類の祖先は、およそ 7 万年前、アフリカから新たな世界へ向けて旅に出たと言われる。以来、人は移動を常としてきた。食料を調達するため、家を建てるため、学びを得るため、金を稼ぐため、悟りを開くため。近年では宇宙空間に居住するための建設計画すらある。私たちは7万年の旅の果て、いや、もしかしたらまだ途上にいるのかもしれない。そして、旅路は宇宙の果てまで続いている。人が移動し続ける存在であるならば、移動について 考えることは生きることについて考えることと近接する。さて、歩き移ろう道の途中、私は何と出会い、何を発見するだろう。近代社会の変容の中で発展と引き換えに手放したものか。あるいは、まだ想像することすらできないものか。それはきっと、自由に生き抜くための技術として、多くの人と分有できる何かに違いない。

I decided to walk all the way from my home in Yamagata to Yubari in Hokkaido. That is because I felt like reflecting once again what“locomotion”means to us. It is said that the ancestors of mankind, which first appeared in Africa, undertook journeys to discover the world about 70,000 years ago, and locomotion has been incident to humans ever since. In order to procure food, to build houses, to learn, to earn money, and to attain enlightenment. In recent years, there are even architectural plans for humans to live in outer space. Is it the end of our 70,000-year-long journey, or is it just a midway point? The road is as long as the universe, and if humans are creatures that keep traveling, reflecting on locomotion is akin to reflecting on life itself. So what am I going to encounter, and what will I discover along the road that I walk? Will it be the things that modern society has abandoned for the sake of expansion in the process of its transformation, or will it be something that we can’t even imagine at this point? In any case, it must be something that will be able to share with a lot of people, as a technique for surviving in freedom.
